Today is such a peaceful morning, and all last night I was thinking about rabbits. That’s what Easter week does to me. I found wonderful illustrations of these cute creatures that I can’t wait to share the inspiration with you now. Well… let me tell you a bit about the artist Alfred Richardson Barber and his rabbits.
This artist was born in Colchester in 1844. He was the second son of an ordinary school teacher. Alfred was married twice, and one of his wives was a painting teacher.
Alfred Richardson Barber specialized in animal paintings, with rabbits being predominant in most of his works. He exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists in London from 1879 to 1893. In 1901, at the age of 56, the painter was teaching drawing, and he passed away in 1924 at the age of 80. His painting “Rabbit Family” was sold at an auction in New York for $23,750.
Barber’s fascination with hares began at a young age, sparked by encounters in the English countryside where he spent his formative years. Growing up amidst the serene beauty of nature, he found solace and inspiration in the flora and fauna that surrounded him. However, it was the sight of hares bounding gracefully across the fields that ignited his passion and became a recurring motif in his artistic journey.
Barber’s work gained recognition for its unique portrayal of hares. His paintings were celebrated for their realism and emotional depth, capturing the curiosity and vulnerability of these creatures. Over the years, his art garnered widespread acclaim, earning him a devoted following of collectors and enthusiasts.
