The Castle of Saint Hilarion is an ancient abode of Cypriot kings and the most beautiful castle in the vicinity of Kyrenia. This castle completes the chain of fortresses that served to protect the kings from Arab raids, alongside Kantara and Buffavento in the Kyrenia Mountains. More information about the city of Kyrenia can be found here.

Castle of Saint Hilarion

History of St. Hilarion Castle.

The first mentions of the castle date back to the times of Richard the Lionheart, after he defeated the ruler Isaac Ducas Comnenus. At that time, the castle was called Didymus or Diodeamur in honor of the god of love Cupid Deus Amor. Another version of the castle’s name is Didymus Twins. Didymus refers to two mountain peaks, and the castle stands on one of them.

It is said that the silhouette of the castle became the prototype for Disney’s cartoon “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” The famous English writer Rosa MacLeay referred to this castle as the “Abode of the Elf King.”

The castle got its present name in honor of the founder of the monastery in Palestine – Hilarion the Great. St. Hilarion loved to travel to different countries and built his small monastery here, on this very mountain, which became his final refuge. After Hilarion’s death, more monks settled in the monastery, and over time, the castle grew to the size we see today. The relics of the saint monk are also kept here. Almost seven centuries ago, the incorruptible remains of Hilarion were discovered.

The construction of the castle was undertaken by the Byzantines under the guidance of Emperor Alexios I, who ruled after 1092.

The arrival of the Lusignans served as an additional fortification for the fortress, transforming it into a summer retreat for the dynasty. Here, knight tournaments and festivals were held, and the kings enjoyed a wonderful life. The castle’s coolness prevailed even on the hottest days, and the windows offered breathtaking views.

Castle of Saint Hilarion

There are myths and legends about the impregnability of the castle. It is said that architects reconstructed the castle in a way that made it impossible to capture it by force. In the historical chronicles of Cyprus, there is no mention of the castle being taken by force. Several years of siege were attempted, and only when all the food supplies ran out did the castle have to surrender its weapons.

If you plan to visit Cyprus, I have a list of the most beautiful places across the country for you.

Three levels of the Fortress.

The castle consists of three levels, each independently defending the fortress. The lowest level, known as the “outer ward,” also called the town, housed the horse yard, military garrison, storerooms, and servants.

On the second level, the “lower ward,” all the main structures of the castle were located. Here stood the Byzantine Church of St. Christopher, a four-level palace for the king with a belvedere, quarters for the royal entourage, and military barracks. Balls and royal family banquets were also held here, and access to the second level was possible only via a drawbridge.

Reaching the third level is not so simple. A narrow path leads straight into the sky. On the third level, the “upper ward,” almost at the very top of the fortress, spread the royal apartments. Today, only ruins remain here, along with a couple of Gothic-style windows called the “Queen’s Window.” The royal chambers are the most romantic place in the castle, a series of abandoned rooms with Gothic vaults.

Castle of Saint Hilarion

The castle stands on a mountain at an altitude of 732 meters, and the panoramic viewpoints offer breathtaking views of the blue sea. Sometimes, in good weather, the shores of Turkey can be seen. The picturesque views from the castle attract many romantics.

If you have free time, the ghost town of Famagusta is nearby and is also worth a visit.

Beautiful Legend of the Tower of Knight John Visconti.

If you look at the neighboring tower, you can hear a sad legend. It is said that in the 14th century, two dozen loyal bodyguards of the brave knight John Visconti were thrown from its windows, followed by the knight himself. This tragedy occurred because of the cunning Queen Eleanor, the same one who imprisoned King Peter I’s lover, Joanna Aleman. As a result of palace coups, Peter I, in which John Visconti directly participated, was killed. Eleanor could not forgive her husband’s murder and sought revenge. What other legends live in this castle?

Legend of the 101st Room.

It is said that there were once 101 rooms here. The first hundred were visible to all, while one enchanted room hid in the depths of the fortress walls, completely filled with golden treasures. Mysterious legends and tales captivate the minds of travelers and medieval history enthusiasts.

When it comes to weekends in the northern part of Cyprus, the Bellapais Abbey cannot be missed!

How to get to Saint Hilarion castle from Nicosia?

Cross the border in Nicosia (read more about this place here), get insurance, and head towards Kyrenia. It’s only 19 kilometers from Nicosia to Kyrenia. Before entering the city of Kyrenia, you will see a sign for St. Hillarion. The highway will lead you in the direction of the Kyrenian Range, where you’ll spot the marble castle on the hilltop. Saint Hilarion Castle stands on a high mountain, and the road to it winds through a steep mountain serpentine, passing through a Turkish military base.

I highly recommend traveling around Cyprus with your own transport, as it’s one of those regions where getting around by car is the easiest! Especially since many attractions are quite far apart. Don’t have your own car? Why not rent one for a day or two? Check prices and availability here.
