What would you rather spend money on? Emotions or things? Or perhaps it’s better to ask, what makes your eyes light up and butterflies flutter in your stomach, so that you wouldn’t mind spending any amount of money?
We all understand that sometimes we need to experience new emotions, just as we need to acquire new things. In order for our lives to flow more comfortably and prosperously, we need both.
But sometimes I notice how surprisingly differently people allocate their budgets. Some are willing to economize on food while traveling, or sacrifice comfort in transportation, opting for a bus instead of a train, but these same people will splurge all their money on gifts, clothes, and souvenirs. Perhaps these people want something to remember the trip by, something they can “touch.”
People receiving the same salary can be completely different. Some take out car loans, restricting themselves to trips for the entire next year, while others spend all their money on short trips around Europe, but eat only sandwiches at home.
For some, it’s more important to experience emotions, while others want to acquire things. And then there are those who won’t spoil themselves with gifts too much but will be ready to spend the entire amount on their loved ones. This is perhaps a kind of emotional acquisition, even if it’s not tours being bought but iPhones and cars.
I really enjoy studying this question and observing people. Personally, I’m closer to Snufkin’s position—more often I gather emotions. And you?
