I just finished watching Bridgertons and what can I say – it’s a delight! I’m feeling a bit excited about it and can’t stop myself from mentioning in every sentence how good this work is! All my thoughts are busy trying to find something similar and I seem to be in luck. I discovered that there is a Bridgertons prequel to Queen Charlotte and her love story with King George. I’m going to finish this post now and run to watch it. But, in the meantime, I’d like to share with you, my dear readers, a selection of the best costume TV series that are as good as the Bridgertons in terms of beautiful visuals, sensuality and energy.
There’s something truly magical about costume shows. They transport you to another era, immerse you in the intricacies of historical events, and introduce you to characters whose lives are so vividly portrayed that they linger in your mind long after the credits roll. I can easily spend all my time watching these series, forgetting about everything else as they pull me in right away and don’t let go.
The best costume TV series.
Bridgerton: For those who haven’t watched, I want to say a few words about this series. Ah, Bridgerton. From the moment I pressed play, I was entranced by the dazzling world of Regency-era London. The sumptuous costumes, the grand ballrooms, and the scandalous intrigue all make for a heady mix. The love stories are passionate and the characters so wonderfully flawed that you can’t help but get invested in their journeys. It’s a show that oozes charm and sophistication, making it impossible to look away.
Outlander: Is a breathtaking blend of romance, adventure, and historical drama. Claire and Jamie’s epic love story, set against the backdrop of 18th-century Scotland, is both heartwarming and heart-wrenching. The show’s ability to weave time travel into a rich historical tapestry is nothing short of genius. Each episode is a journey, and every time I watch, I feel like I’m right there in the Highlands, swept up in the beauty and danger of their world.
The Tudors: Offers a riveting look at the reign of Henry VIII, filled with political intrigue, romance, and betrayal. The series is lush and opulent, with costumes and sets that transport you straight to the heart of the English court. Jonathan Rhys Meyers’ portrayal of the volatile king is magnetic, and the drama that unfolds is utterly gripping. It’s a series that truly brings history to life.
Game of Thrones: Needs no introduction. This epic saga, with its sprawling cast of characters and intricate plotlines, is the epitome of fantasy drama. The show’s ability to blend political intrigue with mythical elements kept me on the edge of my seat for eight unforgettable seasons. The battles, the alliances, the betrayals—each episode was a masterclass in storytelling. Even now, I find myself revisiting Westeros, eager to relive the magic.
House of the Dragon: As a prequel to Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon dives into the history of House Targaryen. The power struggles, dragon lore, and complex characters make it a compelling watch. The show’s focus on the Targaryen dynasty’s rise and fall adds depth to the lore of Westeros, and each episode is a visual and narrative feast. It’s a fantastic addition to the world of Game of Thrones and just as addictive.
Marie Antoinette: Is a visually stunning portrayal of the life of France’s most infamous queen. The opulence of Versailles, the lavish costumes, and the turbulent politics of the time are all captured in exquisite detail. The series delves into the personal and political struggles of Marie Antoinette, making her a sympathetic and fascinating character. It’s a historical drama that’s as beautiful as it is engrossing.
Gentleman Jack: Set in the 19th century, Gentleman Jack chronicles the life of Anne Lister, a landowner and industrialist who defied the norms of her time. Her unapologetic determination and unconventional love life make for a captivating narrative. The show’s blend of historical accuracy and modern sensibilities creates a unique viewing experience that’s both enlightening and entertaining.
Lambs of God: Is a dark and atmospheric tale of three nuns living in isolation on a remote island. Their secluded existence is disrupted by the arrival of a priest with his own agenda. The show is haunting and poetic, with stunning cinematography and powerful performances. It’s a deeply emotional journey that explores themes of faith, resilience, and the clash between tradition and progress.
Anne: A reimagining of Anne of Green Gables, is a heartwarming and poignant series that captures the spirit of L.M. Montgomery’s beloved heroine. The show’s beautiful scenery, charming characters, and touching storylines make it a joy to watch. Anne’s adventures and her unyielding optimism are a reminder of the power of imagination and the importance of finding your place in the world. I will never get tired of saying how much I love this show. It’s very different from the books and the ’85 version, and from everything that was filmed before that. It’s impossibly beautiful, stylish and touching.
Poldark: Is a sweeping saga set in 18th-century Cornwall, following the life of Ross Poldark as he navigates love, loss, and the challenges of a changing society. The breathtaking landscapes, coupled with the rich storytelling and strong performances, make it an unforgettable series. Ross’s journey is filled with drama and romance, and I found myself deeply invested in his struggles and triumphs.
Vikings: Takes you into the heart of Norse mythology and history, with its portrayal of legendary figures like Ragnar Lothbrok. The series is a thrilling blend of action, drama, and historical intrigue. The stunning visuals, epic battles, and complex characters create a captivating narrative that kept me hooked from start to finish. It’s a show that brings the Viking Age to life in all its brutal and beautiful glory.
