Amsterdam is a city of chocolate-like houses; a city that can be bright and colorful despite the perpetual rain; a city where you feel calm and relaxed even among the crowds of tourists. It’s a European-style clean and tidy town that evokes a sense of relaxation and tranquility. Today, I want to share some ideas on how to spend time in Amsterdam, thereby highlighting the cutest stereotypes of the Dutch capital.
Amsterdam is a place where it feels like I don’t need to DO anything, although there’s a lot to do. I’m very happy just wandering around, looking at the beautiful streets, and eating all the food. Here, you catch yourself thinking that this is the town where you feel truly yourself. Amsterdam has a captivating atmosphere, architecture, and perfection in every detail, as well as the unique appearance and lifestyle of the locals.
Even a seasoned traveler will be surprised by this city. It’s the most outrageous and liberated town. It’s a city of interesting things that would seem at least quirky in any other European city. So, here are the key points that will help you plan your route through Amsterdam. With these, you’ll also learn a bit more about the city’s layout and some quirky stereotypes.
Amsterdam from the water – See the city from the water.
Amsterdam is a city where people are always strolling, chatting, and riding boats, yachts, and steamers along the canals. Joining the tourists, I jumped on a steamer and set off to explore Amsterdam from the water because the view of the city is most colorful from here.
The first thing you notice is the wild number of docked boats. They are everywhere, lined up in a row, waiting for their owners. They are incredibly diverse – from old wrecks to pot-like vessels the size of a cruiser. Amsterdam residents love to sell their apartments and move into these floating homes. It may seem like an ordinary boat, but they have internet, showers, kitchens, electricity, and water. It’s very convenient: live under your mom’s house for the first year, the next year near your office, and then by your favorite coffee shop.
If in Russia there are traffic jams of cars and people in the metro, and in the Caucasus, there are jams of sheep and goats, here it’s boats. They navigate as everyone does – randomly, by the stars, by instinct. Yes, there are some rules here, but mainly “some.” The water is where the real Amsterdam life boils, and you definitely need to immerse yourself in it for an hour or two.
But while stuck in a traffic jam, you can slowly drift by the house where Anne Frank hid; wave back to the girls waving at you; peek into the windows of Amsterdam houses; count all the bridges, and most importantly, enjoy the intoxicating atmosphere of this eternally lively city.
You immediately notice the wide windows that are never curtained. This architectural solution is because the doors in the houses are traditionally narrow, and large items are brought in through the windows, which act as second doors. In the past, things were lifted by hooks, but now they use special cranes. This is where the term “Flying Dutchman” comes from.
And why there are no curtains on the windows is explained by a legend about sailors going to sea and the women waiting for them. They didn’t curtain the windows so that the neighbors could keep an eye on the women. How to spend time in Amsterdam else?
Tulip Paradise – Visit the Flower Market.
I don’t think there’s anyone in the world who hasn’t heard about Dutch tulips, especially the Amsterdam flower market. The first thing we remember when we think of this city is not hash cakes or even chocolate houses, but these delicate flowers, tulips.
Everyone who has been to Amsterdam has fleetingly glanced or peeked for at least a minute at this wonderful corner. Describing this splendor is pointless. How can you find words to convey the entire rainbow of colors, sensations, and smells reigning in the tulip paradise? It’s easier to see it for yourself!
There’s a crazy amount of exotic bulbs, flowers of the most incredible colors, hydrangeas, daffodils, amaryllises. Of course, bringing home black tulips was once a novelty, but now black tulips won’t surprise anyone. Tip: take photos carefully to avoid the angry hissing of the vendors.

How to spend time in Amsterdam? The best way is to ride a bicycle. After all, Amsterdam is the capital of two-wheeled friends. It seems like there are more bikes here than people. And it’s not surprising, as the streets are flat and riding is a pleasure.
Imagine, Amsterdam has almost half a million bicycles for about 800 thousand residents. They say when a “steel horse” breaks down, a real Amsterdammer throws it into the canal – that’s why the bottom is littered with this type of transport.
Another interesting fact: cyclists here have priority on the roads. By law, in an accident involving a cyclist and a car, the driver is always at fault!
Museum Amsterdam – Visit these amazing museums.
When visiting new cities, it’s customary to go to museums. This ritual is a must for travelers. And Amsterdam is a city with countless museums. The Van Gogh Museum is more than enough for the average aesthete; the Anne Frank House; the tattoo museum for those who haven’t yet decided to get a tattoo; the torture museum is well complemented by the erotica museum.
Madame Tussauds Museum – a worthy branch of its London counterpart, and many small museums of Amsterdam’s national symbols – the tulip, hashish, cheese, and Heineken beer.
Photogenic Amsterdam – Find the most beautiful locations in the Amsterdam.
You can’t forget your camera when you visit Amsterdam, there’s too much beauty to capture! Below are some of my favorite photo spots. The list of these locations will also help you answer the question of how to spend time in Amsterdam.
📸 Bridges at the intersection of Leidsegracht and Keizersgracht. I love them just as the sun sets, as the bridges have a ring of lights on the arch that turn on in the evening.
📸 Botanical Garden. One of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe, essentially an oasis in the middle of the city.
📸 Damrak. One of the most iconic photo spots due to the quirky buildings. I’d recommend this spot at sunrise or sunset.
📸 Mural Gallery in De Pijp, where you’ll find very interesting street art for Instagram “Wake me up when I’m famous.” It’s fun to take a photo here!
📸 Jordaan District. Another interesting place to wander with beautiful cobbled streets and lovely houses. Gentrification in recent decades has brought more galleries, restaurants, and specialty shops to its streets, but it still retains a special atmosphere.
📸 Prinsengracht Canal. One of the most recognizable in Amsterdam. Here, along the canals with boats and the clock tower of Westerkerk, it’s easy to take the perfect postcard photo.
📸 Van Wonderen Stroopwafels. You can’t visit Amsterdam without treating yourself to the city’s famous stroopwafels. Van Wonderen offers not only some of the tastiest in the region but also the most photogenic!
📸 Rijksmuseum Library. One of the best museums in Amsterdam to learn more about Dutch art and history. Located on Museum Square, next to the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum houses one of the greatest libraries in the world, think of Hogwarts…

By Air: Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is one of Europe’s busiest airports and the primary gateway to the city. Located about 15 kilometers southwest of the city center, it offers numerous international and domestic flights daily.
Many major airlines, including KLM, British Airways, and Delta, offer direct flights to Amsterdam from cities around the world.
Airport Transfer: From Schiphol, you can reach the city center by train (20 minutes), bus, taxi, or rideshare services like Uber.
