Nestled amidst mountains and at the intersection of three valleys lies the charming town of Grenoble. It’s the birthplace of Stendhal and a scientific hub in France, the heart of the Rhône-Alpes region, situated on the Isère River. Today, I’ll share recommendations on how to spend time in Grenoble, how to get there, and highlight the best places to stay overnight.
In ancient times, the city was ruled by Emperor Gratian, hence the name “Gratianopolis,” which evolved into Grenoble. Today, it’s simply called Grenoble, a city of white stone that inspires admiration in many places.
Ideas of what to do in Grenoble.
This place isn’t a large city, but its historical center is tiny, like a little “patch.” While it may not be rich in landmarks, there’s still plenty to do here.
One thing you must see when in Grenoble is the Bastille, accessible via a cable car. From the Bastille, you can glimpse the Olympic houses and stadiums built for the 1968 Olympics, as well as a piece of Mont Blanc.
On your way back, observe the river from one of the numerous bridges – it’s not just a calm, smooth river but a roaring, turbulent stream.
Take a hike into the mountains and then indulge in the local dish with the intriguing name “gratin,” whose recipe is held in strict secrecy.
Blend in with the crowd of students, of which there are many here. Have a glass of wine with them and nibble on some real Greek nuts. How to spend time in Grenoble else?
Stroll through the pedestrian streets, where almost all of the city’s shops are located, along with a huge number of restaurants setting their tables right on the streets, several fountains, and lovely old houses.
Hop on the first bus you see and go wherever it takes you; get off where you feel like it and follow wherever your eyes lead you—this might take you to the outskirts of the city, where you’ll see real French life.
Chase a butterfly or gather a bouquet of daisies, sneak into someone’s garden and sit on the grass and admire the city from above. You’ll see that Grenoble is surrounded by the snowy Alps.
