Liopetri quiet fishing village

We stumbled upon the Liopetri quiet fishing village.

While enjoying our time in Cyprus and visiting all the island’s main attractions, we were in search of places not often found in guidebooks.

One day, as we were driving to Larnaca, we saw a sign for the fishing village of Liopetri. Without reaching the village center, we turned towards the sea.

The first thing I noticed was a large number of cacti and a wild variety of colorful boats and small ships. At that time, I didn’t know that fishermen lived here. We ended up here by chance, although we knew exactly where we were turning off the path.

Liopetri is a fishing village where boats, small piers, and not a single person are frequently encountered. Going a little further, it became clear that you have entered an area untouched by civilization, with deserted beaches bordered by an uneven coastline, against which the waves crashed with force and noise.

The village stretches along the coast of a brackish river, a river that has determined the lives of its inhabitants for many centuries to come. For years, men here have been involved in maritime activities. The Liopetri River is not as wide and deep as other rivers in Cyprus, but that’s not its charm. It spreads like a narrow strip of seawater, inviting passersby with its modest beauty. The beauty of the Liopetri River is as quiet as the village itself, located along its banks.

Salty water in the Liopetri River.

One scorching day, the river completely dried up, and after some time, the sea filled the river with salty water. Now the sea boasts its picturesque tributary, named after the local village of Liopetri. The village got its name because of its flat terrain – no hills or rocks. The word “Liopetri” translates to “few stones.”

The water here is pure, full of seashells, but not every place has easy access to the water. Some areas have corals, but there is plenty of sun and fragrant sea air. This corner is far from all tourist resorts, and besides us, we only saw a bunch of cats and a couple of lizards here.

Fishing life in the village of Liopetri.

Every morning in the village of Liopetri, hardworking sailors on boats loaded with nets and fishing gear deliver freshly caught fish to the “Family Restaurant Demetrion,” the only tavern on the beach. Here, they serve fish mezze or “psaromeze,” as Cypriots call it, a variety of fish dishes (from 10 to 20 dishes).

Men in the village of Liopetri fish, while women, when they are not at home, weave baskets. These baskets have as much fame as Lefkara embroidery. Each basket is woven using ancient techniques, and the secrets of weaving are passed down from mother to daughter. Interested in Lefkara embroidery or just embroidery?
