One of the things I enjoy most about exploring a new place is stumbling upon hidden gems. While traveling through Vyborg, I discovered that just a few kilometers from the city lies an incredible tranquil spot – Mon Repos Park. This picturesque corner of nature instantly captured my heart. Today, I want to share with you photos and recommendations from my visit to Mon Repos Park in Vyborg.
If you’re looking for something new to expand your exploration of the Leningrad Region, then boldly venture into this stunning park for a relaxed stroll amidst centuries-old trees, lakes, and winding paths where forest berries and mushrooms grow.
Mon Repos – this is my sanctuary! It’s a mysterious place, permeated with transparent air and mists. Here, in the morning mist and silence of wooded cliffs, gloomy and grayish caves are hidden. Arriving here, you forget about everything in the world, and peace and grace reign in your soul.
The park fully justifies its name, which translates from French as “my sanctuary.” Tranquility, and fresh air all around, where gentle light streams.
Here, dense trees with sacred paths, gray sheer cliffs over the water’s smooth surface and waves crashing against them, gorges and capes, inlets and lakes, and the few scattered gazebos only complement nature. If there ever was a “Lukomorye” – it would be here.
Here, in complete silence, you can leisurely gather cranberries, blueberries, and mushrooms. It’s a paradise for those in love with the forest.
You feel a special romance on the Island of the Dead, where Ludwigstein Castle is located. You can only reach the castle by boat, if you book a tour at the ticket office upon entering the park.
Mon Repo Park in Vyborg is shrouded in numerous legends and beliefs. Once, Swedish Baron Nikolai lived here, whose spirit you can see, as if floating across the misty lake alongside the ghost of Swedish King Eric. Even I succumbed to magical charms and began to search for trolls, leprechauns, and other gnomes behind the trees.
In addition to fairytale creatures and ghosts, in Mon Repos, you can see a deep gorge with sheer cliffs, along the bottom of which trains run and the statue of Väinämöinen stands. It feels like any moment a deer will jump out and tap its golden hoof.
If you are planning a trip to the Leningrad region, do not forget to include the gardens of Peterhof Park in your route.
