Jūrmala with its whimsical cottages stretches along the shores of the Gulf of Riga. The beaches of this town are clean and wide, and the air is fresh and filled with the scent of pine. If you’re vacationing in Riga, don’t forget to take a day trip to Jūrmala.

One day in Jūrmala

This city is cozy and tidy, exuding tranquility, pure air, and silence. There’s no wild heat here; life flows quietly and leisurely. No one is in a hurry. Couples stroll arm in arm slowly along the main boulevard. A grandma and grandpa sit, one sipping espresso, the other a glass of wine.

Jūrmala has only one tourist street, Jomas, where life thrives. It’s a typical boulevard, like those in Karlovy Vary or Ibiza, essentially like any resort town.

Here, restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, and hotels line up in a chain. They are all located within a short distance from each other, with centuries-old pine trees filling the gaps. And it seems like you’re not in a city but in the bosom of nature. The whole city feels like one big sanatorium.

In the past, Jūrmala attracted a huge number of tourists, from whom the city received significant financial benefits, including from visits to famous festivals. Once, the hotels and restaurants here were overflowing, and waiters were rushed off their feet.

Jūrmala is a city of fat and satisfied cats. Every house is a mansion, belonging to a famous person, and every car is luxurious and expensive. A Porsche roars by, hurrying somewhere towards the center, then a Pagani Huayra flashes in the rearview mirror.

Perhaps every traveler here ponders their own home, what it would be like, what color it would be, how many floors it would have, how many rooms, and what flowers would grow in the flower beds.

I walked the streets and chose my perfect home. It would be great to live even for a short while in a favorite one, or at least have a cup of tea with a friendly host.
