Hello everyone! I can’t believe that we’ve already reached the midpoint of summer. I want you to get cozy right now and let in that magical feeling hidden in the paintings of the German artist Hans Thoma. Because these paintings are so summery, light and directly breathe lightness and peace.
Hans Thoma was a German symbolist painter. Unfortunately, there is only a dull biography of Hans online, but nevertheless, I would like to tell you a little about him.
This magnificent artist was born on October 2, 1839. He was the son of a miller and learned the basics of painting from a clock dial artist. Hans Thoma spent his childhood in the village of Bernau in the Black Forest, but later went to Basel to study painting. Like all aspiring artists, Hans earned only pennies for his landscapes and portraits in the early years of his career.
Over time, Hans made friends with other artists, including Müller and Arnold Böcklin, who became his most important patrons and helped him further develop his artistic talent.
Hans Thoma’s creative legacy is enormous. It includes about 900 paintings, engravings, and lithographs. I have selected my favorites here. The works of this artist are often considered “folk paintings” and seen as simple, but upon closer inspection, they reveal entirely opposite elements.
On one hand, artist Hans Thoma is a magnificent realist landscape painter, and on the other, he loves to incorporate fairy-tale figures and images from ancient sagas into his works.
I’m just in love with the artwork. I love this fairy theme so much that I can look at these paintings for hours. How great that this artist has managed to just incredibly incorporate everything I love so much into his work – ethereal fairies with wings and peaceful countryside and nature. These paintings are simply stunning!
Want to get even more inspiration from paintings on rural life? Then take a look at the works of similar artists – pastoral paintings by artist Robert Walker Macbeth and natural engravings by Matthaeus Merian.
