Today, we visited a truly magical place – the Ruskeala Marble Canyon in Karelia. Isn’t it beautiful? Those who have been there know how unique it is.
The best part is that the canyon is only 30 kilometers from Sortavala, so you can visit these two attractions in Karelia in one trip. The canyon itself is worth at least a day’s visit – its landscapes are breathtaking. And there’s plenty to do here, especially in the summer.
A little history about Ruskeala Canyon.
The Ruskeala Canyon was formed at the site of former quarries. After the end of the Great Northern War, the new border between Russia and Sweden ran right through the canyon, placing the Swedish quarries on our territory.
In the times of Catherine the Great, marble was quarried here and used to build St. Petersburg’s buildings, including the Hermitage and St. Isaac’s Cathedral. The gray-green marble was also used to adorn the Primorskaya metro station.
Mountain Ruskeala Canyon today.
Today marble walls frame a pristine lake with water so clear you can see 15-18 meters deep. Interestingly, this place is quite young, well, young for tourists. The park started operating only 20 years ago. Trails with viewing platforms were laid here, and now you can even descend into the shafts without special equipment, just by walking. By the way, on the way to the mine, you might encounter bats.
In the evening, Ruskeala is illuminated by lights that change and shimmer, reflecting off the snow and creating a magical effect (from March to November). It’s not only a lovely place to stroll and take photos but also offers plenty of entertainment, like husky sledding, zip-lining, banana boat rides, and agility challenges in a rope park.
In the summer, you can row boats, jump from a Tarzan swing, and even go diving, as the water is crystal clear. In winter, an ice rink appears, and the ice in the grottoes forms intricate shapes.
Essentially, this is a whole tourist complex, with the marble canyon itself being the star attraction, a piece of beauty crafted by nature. I couldn’t put my camera down; the beauty of the marble canyon is endless.
If you love the smell of pine trees and dream of visiting a magical place to escape the hustle and bustle of the metropolis, welcome to the Ruskeala Marble Canyon in Karelia. Karelia is a delight! How to get to Ruskeala Marble Canyon in Karelia.
Getting there might seem like a journey, but it’s all part of the adventure.
From Petrozavodsk: The most straightforward route is from Petrozavodsk, the capital of Karelia. You can take a train or a bus. Trains run regularly from Petrozavodsk to Sortavala, the closest town to Ruskeala. The train journey takes about 4-5 hours. Once in Sortavala, you can catch a taxi or a local bus to Ruskeala, which is about 30 km away.
From Saint Petersburg: For those starting in Saint Petersburg, there’s an even more convenient option. The high-speed train “Lastochka” takes you directly from Saint Petersburg to Sortavala in around 4 hours. From there, you can take a taxi or a local bus to mountain park. Alternatively, you can drive from Saint Petersburg, which takes about 5-6 hours. The scenic drive is worth the trip, offering beautiful views of the Karelian landscape.
From Finland: If you are coming from Finland, you can cross the border at Värtsilä/Niirala and drive to Ruskeala via Sortavala. The drive from the border to Ruskeala takes about 2-3 hours, depending on traffic and border crossing times.
I highly recommend traveling by car, as it is the most convenient and direct option. If you don’t have a car, you can rent one at very reasonable prices here. Be sure to inspect the car for any scratches or damage marked in the agreement before leaving the parking lot, and return to the office to inform the manager if you notice anything not mentioned.
