If you’re planning a trip to the enchanting city of Utrecht, you’re in for a treat. But first, you need to get there! Here’s a quick guide on how to reach Utrecht, whether you’re coming from nearby cities or from across the globe.
By Plane: If you’re flying in from another country, the nearest major airport is Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS). Schiphol is one of Europe’s busiest airports and is well-connected with flights from all over the world. Once you land, getting to Utrecht is a breeze.

Train: From Schiphol Airport, you can take a direct train to Utrecht Central Station (Utrecht Centraal). Trains run frequently, approximately every 15 minutes, and the journey takes about 30 minutes.
From Amsterdam: A direct train from Amsterdam Central Station to Utrecht Central Station takes about 27 minutes. Trains run very frequently, so you won’t have to wait long.
From Rotterdam: The journey from Rotterdam Central Station to Utrecht Central Station is also direct and takes about 38 minutes.
By Car: If you prefer to drive, Utrecht is well-connected by road to other parts of the Netherlands. The city is located near several major highways, making it easy to reach.
I highly recommend traveling by car as it is the most convenient and direct option. If you don’t have a car, you can rent one at very reasonable prices here.
From Amsterdam: The drive from Amsterdam to Utrecht is approximately 50 kilometers and takes about 45 minutes via the A2 highway.
From Rotterdam: Driving from Rotterdam to Utrecht covers about 60 kilometers and takes around 55 minutes via the A20 and A12 highways.
Parking in Utrecht can be challenging, especially in the city center, so consider using one of the Park and Ride (P+R) facilities on the outskirts of the city. From there, you can take public transport into the center.
