Some time ago, I was given a very unexpected opportunity to explore the Rhône-Alpes region in France. At that moment, I had plenty of free time, a little cash, and a huge desire to discover yet another new country. I didn’t hesitate for long, hastily packed my things into a backpack, hopped into a taxi, and dashed to the airport. Today, I’ll share memories from my first trip to France. I’ll talk a bit about the most beautiful road towards Lyon and the wonderful village of Bellegarde-sur-Valserine with its stunning turquoise waters.
Upon arrival at Geneva Airport, we had a journey ahead to the city of Lyon, located in France. There were two options: a paid and fast route, or a free, very long, winding, picturesque one, with aqueducts, emerald rivers, lakes, and villages. We didn’t have to think for long, and our whole group unanimously chose the second option.
We drove for over five hours, stopping wherever we wanted, passing through beautiful villages, meadows, and forests.
I was in the car, looking out the window, trying to imprint every sight into my memory, and thinking how darn good it was here. France is the kind of country where you want to visit every town and every village.
Bellegarde-sur-Valserine was the first stop on my French escapade. When I saw it through the car window, my jaw almost dropped from turning my head so quickly that I almost sprained my neck from the desire to stop.
My introduction to France began with a turquoise river, with houses stacked on top of each other along its banks. The village of Bellegarde-sur-Valserine is a quiet, cozy town, with a couple of restaurants and small guesthouses where the French live, rent out their rooms to visitors, and do nothing more than enjoy the solitude and the splash of waves from the raging emerald river.
It so happens that due to the nature here, rivers flow with lime, hence the magical shade that attracted me like a magnet.
The road from Geneva to Lyon is rich with charming villages, standing on the banks of rivers and lakes. If you want to rest on the outskirts of Lyon, take this route, stopping wherever you like.

How to travel around Rhône-Alpes.
France has an extensive high-speed rail network, making train travel a convenient option for reaching the Rhône-Alpes region. Lyon is a major railway hub, with frequent TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse) connections to Paris and other cities across France. Grenoble and Chambéry also have train stations with connections to the rest of the country.
For those who prefer the flexibility of driving, the Rhône-Alpes region is easily accessible by car. Major highways such as the A6, A7, and A40 connect the region to neighboring countries and cities. Driving through the French countryside offers the opportunity to discover hidden gems and picturesque villages along the way. I highly recommend traveling by car, as it is the most convenient and direct option. If you don’t have a car, you can rent one at very reasonable prices here.
