This winter, I fulfilled my long-held dream of visiting Karelia. It’s so beautiful here. You can stop every kilometer and take stunning photos right from the road. After all the beauty I managed to see on this trip, it’s hard to say which place is the most beautiful, magical, and extraordinary. Karelia is like a fairy tale! But, undoubtedly, one of the most memorable places was the Kivach Waterfall. It is a four-tiered cascade of water, 170 meters long, which falls into one of the most picturesque rivers in Karelia – the Suna, which flows through a picturesque landscape of dense forests and rocky terrain. When I first heard about the Kivach Waterfall, often referred to as the “Silver Abyss of Karelia,” I was instantly intrigued. The name itself evokes a sense of mystery and grandeur, hinting at something truly spectacular. Nestled in the heart of the Karelia region in Russia, Kivach is not just any waterfall; it’s a natural marvel that has captivated visitors for centuries.
I came to see how the rapid flow of the Kivach Waterfall, which translates from Finnish as “powerful,” flows. The water stream first crashes onto one platform of solid rock, then slides to the second, rushing headlong and turning into a mountain river.
The surrounding nature is just as impressive: huge rocks, moss-covered stones, a peat river with almost black water. The air! Amazingly fresh air, so much so that you can’t get enough of it. You stand there, eyes closed, listening to the noise of the bubbling water, and feel full of energy despite another long day on the road.
In severe frost, the waterfall streams can freeze, forming an icy crust. But for most of the year, the surface of the taiga rivers is calm and unwavering. However, with the arrival of spring, the Karelian waterfall turns into a raging torrent. It’s even customary to call it by a different name – “padun,” a name that speaks for itself.
But what truly sets Kivach apart is its historical and cultural significance. The waterfall has been a source of inspiration for poets, artists, and travelers for centuries. It was even mentioned by the great Russian poet Gavrila Derzhavin, who immortalized its splendor in his verses.
The name “Silver Abyss of Karelia” adds an air of enchantment to Kivach. This poetic moniker is derived from the way the waterfall appears in different light conditions. On bright, sunny days, the water glistens and shimmers as it cascades down the rocks, resembling streams of liquid silver. This sparkling spectacle has earned Kivach its legendary nickname, capturing the imaginations of those who visit.
The Kivach Nature Reserve, established in 1931, is home to a diverse array of plant and animal species. It’s a haven for botanists and wildlife enthusiasts, offering the chance to see rare plants like the Karelian birch and various species of orchids.

How to get to Kivach Waterfall.
Kivach is located 54 kilometers from Petrozavodsk and 5 kilometers from the federal highway M18. A trip to the waterfall can be combined with a visit to the nearby Martial Waters and the Assumption Church.
You can reach the waterfall by bus from Petrozavodsk. A bus departs from the bus station to the village of Sopokha or Kondopoga. But after getting off, you’ll have to walk 8 kilometers unless you hitchhike (don’t forget about BlaBlaCar). Alternatively, you can join a guided tour from Petrozavodsk, which often includes transportation and a knowledgeable guide.

But the easiest way to reach the waterfall is by car, which takes around 1.5 hours. I highly recommend traveling by car, as it is the most convenient and direct option. If you don’t have a car, you can rent one at very reasonable prices here.

What need to know before visiting Kivach Waterfall in Karelia.
Entrance Fees and Opening Hours: Visiting Kivach Waterfall in Karelia is surprisingly affordable. The entrance fee is around 300 rubles (approximately $4) per person. For children, students, and seniors, the fee is usually reduced to around 150 rubles ($2).
The opening hours are typically from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, but it’s always a good idea to check the official website or contact the park administration for any changes in schedule, especially during holidays or adverse weather conditions.
Wear Comfortable Shoes: The paths around the waterfall can be uneven and slippery, so make sure to wear sturdy, comfortable shoes suitable for walking on rocky terrain.
Bring a Raincoat or Umbrella: The weather in Karelia can be unpredictable, and it’s always wise to be prepared for a sudden shower, especially if you’re visiting in the spring or autumn.
Pack a Picnic: There are several picnic areas near the waterfall where you can enjoy a meal while soaking in the stunning views. Bringing your own food and drinks can enhance your experience and save you time.
Accessible Beauty: Despite its remote location, Kivach is quite accessible. The reserve has well-maintained paths and viewing platforms, allowing visitors to experience the waterfall from various vantage points. There are also informational signs that provide insights into the history and ecology of the area.
Photography Tips: For the best photos, try to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the light is softer. A tripod can be helpful for capturing long-exposure shots of the waterfall.
Stay Alert for Wildlife: Karelia is home to a variety of wildlife, including birds, squirrels, and even moose. Keep an eye out for these creatures, but remember to keep a safe distance and not disturb them.
Don’t forget to find the 200-year-old grove of Karelian birches within the reserve.
