Talk about winter nostalgia today? Let’s ignore the fact that New Year’s and winter have long passed and just imagine that it’s perfectly normal to post New Year’s photos a month before summer. Since I try to post in chronological order, finding old photos gives me a very peculiar feeling. Honestly, I laugh when I look at them. But probably in years, I’ll feel the same about what I’m capturing now.

Winter nostalgia

Looking at these photos taken in winter Moscow, I feel cozy and pleasant inside. I love this city, but even though I live elsewhere now, I really hope to visit it again someday.

And here’s what I’ve realized: when I lived in Moscow and couldn’t stand winter there, which lasted almost 6 months. You could say that there were only two seasons there – prolonged summer and prolonged winter, when the off-season with autumn and spring lasted only a couple of weeks each. But the funny thing is, it turns out I was okay with that back then, despite my unrestrained grumbling, and I got used to it.

Now, living in Serbia, everything has changed. In Serbia, there’s a normal spring that lasts 3 months, a normal summer that lasts 3 months, a normal autumn that lasts 3 months, and winter, which naturally also lasts three months. But for me, this is not normal. Now I want winter for half a year.

Through living in Serbia, I’ve come to realize that sometimes I just want to retreat into my den and hibernate for six months, as I did in Moscow. But here, you can’t keep up with the seasons. It was just New Year’s, and bam, everything is already blossoming and coming to life. Probably, this is a huge plus for Serbia, with its mild climate and weather, and maybe someday I’ll get used to it. But for now, all I can do is scroll through these old photos taken in Gorky Park and indulge in nostalgia.

Winter nostalgia

When I lived in Moscow, I was grumbling about winter and complained a lot about this time of year, so I decided to make a list of the winter positives that I actually loved:

  • The first snow, falling so slowly, as if frozen in the air.
  • Santa Claus is already on his way.
  • Mulled wine in a favorite mug.
  • Watching series surrounded by lit garlands and candlesticks.
  • Frosty walks to the post office for parcels from marketplaces.
  • Cute tights and mittens.
  • Steam from the mouth in the morning.
  • Frost underfoot at dawn.
  • Brushing off mountains of snow after a snowfall.

These are my favorite winter moments. What do you like most about winter?
