And what do you think about such a simple and ingenious thought: You will never do all your tasks? Yesterday I pondered what would happen when I finish all my tasks and whether it’s even possible. I realized that when I finish one project, a new one will immediately take its place, and so on indefinitely.
I make lists, cross off today’s tasks from them, move unfinished ones to the next day, and at some point, the race to “get everything done” begins. It’s worth realizing that the day when everything is crossed off the list will never come. It just doesn’t happen.
You finish one project, remember about a half-forgotten old task, finish the work, also remembering about household chores, and even if everything is done around the house, dinner is cooked, and the apartment is cleaned, you’ll remember the balcony that needs organizing for years, replacing windows, buying a new refrigerator, a new vacuum cleaner. And as soon as you start dealing with it, new worries immediately arise, your throat gets sore, and the groceries run out.
And yet, we also need to find time and energy for self-improvement and relationships. We all need time to spend at least a few minutes a day thinking about what we are doing wrong or not doing right for ourselves and our loved ones (this could be analyzing nutrition, analyzing physical activity, analyzing interpersonal relationships). And if we ignore this rule, our lives will become even more difficult in the future, and the number of problems will only increase.
Allowing ourselves to just go with the flow is too expensive a pleasure for us. Perhaps if we spend more time evaluating what we eat and how we speak, our health will be maximally long-lasting, and our relationships with loved ones will flow much smoother. But still, we always need time for reflection and analysis.
Ask those who you think are maximally productive if they have finished all their tasks this week? It turns out, no. And it’s impossible.
Such is the unbreakable cycle of tasks in nature, and it’s forever. We can only take a little breath.
