Somewhere in the distance, atop a hill, tiny houses of the Greek village of Afitos have grown, appearing like matchboxes from afar. This village bears no resemblance to any other village on the Halkidiki peninsula. All the houses are built from porous stone, giving them a unique appearance. From the main square, a road leads to the edge of the cliff, where a breathtaking panorama of the sea and the Sithonia peninsula unfolds. This spot is what the Greeks call the “balcony of Afitos”.

The village has managed to preserve its special charm and old-time allure. Charming taverns with residential apartments stand in the shade of lush trees, under the sprawling canopy of which guests sit at tables.

People from different corners of the world come here. Some for just a day, others for a week, and some stay forever, enchanted by the local landscape where the magical scents of lavender and myrtle linger.

You ascend through cobblestone streets, encountering clusters of grapes, moving forward, descending a slope, and before you lie white houses. Passing by the whitewashed houses, admiring the geraniums planted in flowerbeds and the magnificent sea panorama. And you smile, content like a cat that has just eaten a whole jar of condensed milk.

I was happy to wander through the labyrinth of magical streets in the village of Afitos. After all, there’s a fairytale behind every corner. In the village, summer is peaceful and cozy. There are very few tourists, and nothing disrupts the magic.

If you’re planning a trip to the Halkidiki peninsula and seeking more recommendations, then you should definitely read a post about the most beautiful places in this region.

Greek village of Afitos

The Greek village of Afitos, with its charming shady streets, quaint terraces, and numerous taverns, evokes a feeling of endearment. Here, the value of life is felt in everything. It’s in the quietness and cleanliness of the streets, in the pots of flowers displayed on porches, in the spring bloom of almonds and the scent of oranges, in the serene faces and kind smiles of the elderly. It’s also in the art of every resident to create their own nest with love.

A breeze blows from the water, delicate scents emanate from the emerald crowns, the song of a restless cricket is heard, and the smell of grilled fish wafts from cozy restaurants and modest taverns.

It’s simply impossible to resist all these scents that permeate everywhere here. Perhaps we should step into one of them?

Outside the tavern window, as evening falls over Afitos, the sun sets. Like the golden glow of a dying lamp, it falls on the narrow streets preparing for sleep. The evening’s bright orange rays flood the town, and Afitos becomes the perfect place to witness the sunset.

Swallows settle in their nests under the tiled roofs. The voices and sounds of the village subside, the mustard-colored petals of daisies in clay pots close, and the blue shutters of quiet houses are shut. Perhaps one could stay here a little longer, under one of the village’s roofs?

How to get to the Greek village of Afytos.

The distance from Thessaloniki Airport is 91 kilometers, from the capital of Halkidiki, Polygyros, it’s 48 kilometers. To reach Afytos, you need to first take bus number 79A to the KTEL Halkidiki bus station, and then transfer to the bus heading to the resort. The journey may take more than four hours.

I highly recommend traveling by car, as it’s the most convenient and direct option. If you don’t have a car, you can rent one at very reasonable prices here.
