Greek holidays: Ideas for what to see in Halkidiki

I have traveled all over mainland Greece, and the Halkidiki peninsula stands out to me as an island drowning in greenery, full of aromas and fragrant flowers. Halkidiki is an opportunity to forget the need to rush somewhere and endlessly do something. Here, the rays of the scorching sun pierce through, and the air is filled with the scent of salty splashes and fresh olives. Here, you feel like you’re in “Zeus’s pocket.” Today, I want to share with you ideas for what to see in Halkidiki.

Nestled in the northern part of the country, this stunning peninsula is a treasure trove waiting to be discovered.

On one side, there stretches a sandy beach for several kilometers, bordered by motionless rocks hiding behind each other, visible in the distance. Gardens and orchards, resembling patchwork quilts from the cliffs’ heights, lie on the other side. The sea can be restless here, but since it is shallow, the waves do not rise high. You can walk far into the sea on soft sand, and the water will only reach your knees. Besides sun loungers with umbrellas, several taverns are located on the hot sand warmed by the sun.

What is a must-do while in Halkidiki? – Have lunch at one of the coastal eateries. There are millions of them here; choose any, they are all wonderful! Greeks cannot imagine life without olives; they love them in any form and interpretation.

The second thing to do is to make sure how clean the water is here. Sandy beaches, beautiful turquoise bays are not yet overrun by curious tourists.

At the very feet on the sandy shallows, streaks resembling thin coral-pink threads are often noticeable. They consist of crumbs created by the sea, grinding various underwater finds. And not only threads cover the beach, but also a whole lace of secrets and mysteries.

Sarti Beach.

Let’s start with the bays. Picture-perfect and surrounded by crystal-clear waters, these bays are like something out of a dream. First up, we have Sarti Beach. Located on the eastern side of the Sithonia peninsula, this sandy paradise is perfect for soaking up the sun or taking a refreshing dip in the Aegean Sea. Trust me, you won’t want to leave once you set foot on this pristine shore.

Kavourotripes. Ideas for what to see in Halkidiki.

Next on our list is the secluded gem known as Kavourotripes. Tucked away amidst pine trees and rocky cliffs, this series of small coves offers a sense of serenity that’s hard to find elsewhere. Spend a day here and feel all your worries melt away as you lounge on the smooth rocks and listen to the gentle lapping of the waves.

Afitos Village.

Now, let’s venture inland and explore some of the charming villages that dot the Halkidiki landscape. Our first stop is Afitos, a picturesque village perched high on a cliff overlooking the sea. With its cobblestone streets, traditional stone houses, and panoramic views, Afitos is a photographer’s paradise. Nikiti village.

Further south, we come to the village of Nikiti. Steeped in history and culture, Nikiti is a delight to explore on foot. Take a stroll through its narrow streets, lined with colorful bougainvillea and charming boutiques. Village of Ouranoupolis.

Last but certainly not least, we have the village of Ouranoupolis. Known as the “Gateway to Mount Athos,” this seaside village is a must-visit for history buffs and nature lovers alike. Explore the ancient tower of Prosforio, stroll along the waterfront promenade, or hop on a boat tour to get a glimpse of the monasteries that dot the nearby coastline.

I highly recommend travelling around Halkidiki with your own transport, as this is one of those counties where it’s easiest to get around by car!
