After exploring Budapest, I had a bit of free time to see something else, something special that I might really enjoy. All the guidebooks unanimously recommend visiting Szentendre to experience the local flavor. So that’s where I decided to go. If you also have an extra day, don’t miss the chance to visit this wonderful Hungarian village of Szentendre.

Hungarian village of Szentendre

It turned out that this small town is only 17 kilometers from Budapest. After buying some sweets for the road and hopping on the nearest suburban train, I found myself in this amazing place in just half an hour.

Nestled along the banks of the Danube River, Szentendre is a picturesque town in Hungary that offers a delightful blend of culture, history, and art. This charming town also is known for its well-preserved Baroque architecture.

This town was founded by Serbian refugees fleeing the Turks, which is why there are so many churches. Over time, village became the artistic center of the country, attracting artists, poets, and other creative individuals.

This town seems like it was made for tourists. It’s like an open-air museum where the main exhibits are toy-like one-story houses, souvenir streets, charming buildings, churches, and museums.

I love the layered complexity of ancient cities and their intricate perspectives. In Hungarian village of Szentendre, you can never be sure where a winding street might lead or what might be hiding around the next corner.

I’m always so happy when I find such alleys. Walking up them, a whole new world opens up for me: new squares, antique shops where I can spend half an hour, cozy cafes, or just pleasant parks for a stroll. Here are some must-see attractions and experiences in this enchanting town.

Marzipan Szentendre.

In the streets of the town, there are peasant houses brought from all over Hungary. But the main highlight of the town is the Marzipan Museum, as its confectioner Karoly Szabo is one of the most respected in the EU. Here, you can find a chocolate Budapest Parliament, a sweet map of Hungary, marzipan Hungarian kings, and a life-size Michael Jackson.

Danube Promenade – Hungarian village of Szentendre.

Take a leisurely stroll along the Danube Promenade for stunning views of the river and the surrounding landscape. The promenade is lined with cafes and restaurants where you can relax and enjoy a meal with a view. It’s also a great spot for a picnic or a boat ride on the Danube. The serene atmosphere and scenic beauty make it a perfect place to unwind.

The House of Christmas.

Like any self-respecting European town, this village has its own House of Christmas. In Europe, you know, you can find a Christmas tree decorated with angels even in summer. Here on the shelves are unique toys, handmade decorations, and typical Chinese Christmas trinkets. In any case, it’s impossible to leave here empty-handed.

The smell here is something so familiar and painfully recognizable. These toys smell like my dacha. And the scent of paprika (a symbol of Hungary) is everywhere.

Hungarian village of Szentendre captivated me from the first minutes. Tiny streets, radiant residents, doll-like houses – all this holds many interesting places. This is a fairy-tale town, a wonder-town that immerses you in a festive atmosphere.

If you are planning a trip through Eastern Europe and are looking for hidden gems, include these magical locations in your itinerary: medieval Bratislava, a pilgrimage to Kutna Hora, and the spa town of Karlovy Vary.

How to get to Szentendre from Budapest.

By Car: If you prefer the flexibility of driving, renting a car is a great option. From central Budapest, take Route 11 northbound. Journey Duration: The drive takes about 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

I highly recommend traveling by car, as it’s the most convenient and direct option. If you don’t have a car, you can rent one at very reasonable prices here.
